Bread Crumb 3: As Scary As It Gets
Text Transcripts
The comic pages are in full colour using a pink and red colour scheme.
Transitions between scenes will be marked with an asterism, like this: ⁂"I have heard that the Halloween is a festival where people dress up as scary monsters, although I have never experienced it myself…" Despite Jacques's typical apathetic visage, a mischievous glint in his eye betrays his excitement. "This is the first year that Media has agreed to let us partake in the festivities."
Jacques is dressed like Red Riding Hood: a traditional red dress, a white apron and a long red hood adorned with white stripes and flowers embroidered near the hem. "I believe that your presence this year has influenced him psychically," Jacques says as he lifts Bread up like a cat. Bread, looking totally unimpressed, dons a large toast-shaped headdress with a cube of butter on top and a picnic handkerchief as a cape.
"Is thare anythin' ye dinnae believe tae be 'influenced psychically?'" she asks.
"I think the fact that I have to live with Media right as he adopts the form of my mortal enemy is psychic interference on Anthony's part," Jacques says, despite this evidently not answering the actual question. "To upset me, specifically."
Bread can only stare, dumbfounded at his logic.
"… Judge?"
Bread and Jacques turn towards the voice. That large, fluffy tail… those twitching ears… there's no doubt about it, Media is dressed as…!
Some wolf guy.
"Ello," he says with a forced smile, posture hunched. "Looking forward to spending the day with you."
"Not looking forward to anything else…" Media mutters under his breath.
Jacques approaches him, curious about his costume, but dreading the outcome. He stands next to him for a moment. He pokes Media on the cheek. Bread glances at Jacques, and then at the pathetic excuse for a wolf, then at Jacques again. Dread fills the room as Jacques comprehends the situation.
"You are still human."
Jacques is appalled at this discovery, wide-eyed and shivering. His expectations are shattered. His excitement destroyed. His initial plan of dressing up as a zombie suddenly becoming more appealing in retrospect, since it's become very clear that this act of betrayal has killed him anyway. He's dead. Media killed him. Perished by the hand of false promises.
"You said the Halloween is for dressing up as the evil monsters," Jacques spits out, gnawing at Bread's breadness in frustration.
"Oi leave the costume outa this ya melt," Bread retaliates, repeatedly stabbing Jacques in the neck.
Media tries to defend himself with a rubbish last-ditch argument. "Um, I have wolf ears--"
"The one time I agree to celebrate your World's traditions together and you disappoint me," Jacques says despondently without even letting Media excuse himself.
"To be fair, you two aren't dressed like monsters, either," Media twiddles his fingers. He melts in shame as the two stare at him, unimpressed.
"Ah'm a talkin' piece o' breid. That's scary."
"Indeed. Few things are more terrifying than when your breakfast becomes sentient. I hate sentient objects. No offence, Bread."
"Offence taken."
Media buries half his face in his scarf. Turning to Jacques, he asks "… And you?"
"I am a helpless bird venturing into the forest alone."
"How is that scary?"
Jacques sticks his tongue out, looking as blank as ever. "Well, it used to scare my mother when I did it."
Media blushes, feeling embarrassed as the two orient him on what a monster is supposed to look like, in case he apparently wasn't aware.
"You are supposed to have a hundred eyes!" Jacques explains.
"Then a million teeth," Bread adds.
"And then you get excluded from society!" Jacques says. Media's eyes widen, taken aback by the assertion.
"Then you resent the world for hating you just for what you are—"
"Um," Media tenses up, the uncomfortable claims reminding Media too much of…
"—and in your goal of revenge—"
"Can you—" one of Media's thoughts, or a memory…
"You permanently destroy"
A dark wing covered in blood.
"everything you loved."
"You can eat as much chocolate as you want today, My Judge," Media changes the topic.
"Waouh!" Jacques exclaims.
The two wag their tails in unison. Bread, on the other hand, is not excited about the prospect. "Ain't chocolate poisonous for birds…?"
Notes
Not much to say about this one. I rushed it on the same day as Halloween and uploaded it on 11:49 PM, then realised I'd have to write a note which took ten minutes, pushing it up to 11:59. I mean, I made it, but waouh, that was not fun. At the time I drew this, this was the first BreadAVOTA update in over a year, and because I did it on impulse, I didn't have the time to execute my original plan before I would run out of time. For that reason, the art and the progression of the 'punchline' here are quite lacklustre.
The original sequence I had considered dwelled more on the choice to dress as 'Little Red Riding Hood' characters in specific. I would have coloured that second bonus illustration. There would have been a joke about Jacques choosing to dress up as a character whose entire thing is to, uh, get eaten by a scary wolf, because Jacques is all about his Preferences and Interests Of A Particular Kind. And how the evil scary wolf is supposed to get killed at the end. Or something. I mean, I ran out of time to do this particular concept, so it's not the most hashed-out.
Happy Halloween.
